Question of the day

Which wireless encryption type is the most susceptible to interception and decryption?

The main idea here is why some wireless encryption schemes are fundamentally insecure. WEP is the weakest by design. It uses a stream cipher (RC4) with a 24-bit initialization vector that is sent in the clear with every packet. That small IV space repeats quickly in real networks, which lets an attacker collect enough traffic to perform keystream reuse attacks and recover the key. In addition, WEP uses a simple CRC for integrity instead of a cryptographic MAC, so data integrity isn’t strongly protected and tampering can go undetected. All of these flaws together make WEP easy to intercept and decrypt with basic tools. By contrast, WPA2 and WPA3 use AES-based encryption (CCMP or GCMP) with per-packet keys and stronger integrity protections, and WPA3 adds even more robust authentication, making interception and offline decryption far less feasible. AES-128, when used within these modern protocols, is a strong cipher and not prone to the same weaknesses as WEP. So, the option with the inherent, well-known weaknesses that make interception and decryption easy is WEP.
